Frequently asked questions

Who is covered under ESIC?
ESIC covers employees working in factories, shops, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, road transport, and certain other establishments with 10+ employees (20+ in some states), earning up to Rs 21,000/month gross. Construction workers, agricultural workers, and domestic workers are currently excluded. ESIC coverage extends to the employee's entire family — spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents.
What are the ESIC contribution rates?
Employee contribution: 0.75% of gross wages. Employer contribution: 3.25% of gross wages. Total ESIC = 4% of gross wages. Employees earning up to Rs 137/month (i.e., Rs 21,000 × 0.75% rounded) are exempt from the employee share during their contribution period. ESI contribution is calculated on actual gross wages including all allowances.
What benefits does ESIC provide?
ESIC benefits include: sickness benefit (70% of wages for up to 91 days), maternity benefit (full wages for 26 weeks), disablement benefit (90% of wages for permanent disability), medical benefit (for employee and family — OPD, inpatient, specialist, surgery, medicine), funeral expenses, and dependant's benefit for family in case of death. These benefits make ESIC extremely valuable relative to the 0.75% employee contribution.
