The employer's 12% PF contribution is split: only 3.67% goes to your EPF account -- the remaining 8.33% (capped at Rs 1,250/month) goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme). So on a Rs 30,000 basic, your EPF gets Rs 1,100 from employer (3.67%) not Rs 3,600 (12%). VPF (Voluntary PF) lets you contribute extra at the same 8.25% tax-free rate -- useful for tax-efficient debt allocation in your portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

How is EPF contribution calculated?
Employee contributes 12% of basic + DA. Employer also contributes 12% of basic + DA, but split as: 8.33% to EPS (capped at Rs 1,250/month if basic <= Rs 15,000; or actual 8.33% if opted for higher pension) and 3.67% to EPF. Total EPF credit per month = employee 12% + employer 3.67%. Interest on EPF: 8.25% p.a. (2023-24). EPF balance grows from both contributions plus interest.
What is VPF and how much can I contribute?
VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund) allows you to contribute more than the mandatory 12% to your PF account, up to 100% of basic salary. The additional contribution earns the same EPF interest rate (8.25%) and is tax-free under 80C up to Rs 1.5 lakh total (employee PF + VPF). Interest is tax-free only if annual PF contribution is below Rs 2.5 lakh (above this, interest is taxable).
Can my employer contribute less than 12% to EPF?
No -- 12% is the statutory minimum for employers whose employees earn basic <= Rs 15,000/month. For employees earning more, the employer can choose to limit PF on Rs 15,000 basic (Rs 1,800/month contribution) instead of actual basic. Many private sector employers cap PF contribution at Rs 1,800/month regardless of actual salary, which reduces your EPF corpus significantly over a career.
