Most Indians underestimate retirement corpus by 40-60% because they ignore inflation. Rs 50,000/month expenses today will cost Rs 1.8 lakh/month in 20 years at 6% inflation. The standard rule: accumulate 25x your annual retirement expenses (4% withdrawal rate). But for India, use 30-33x given longer life expectancy and higher inflation. Start SIPs early -- delay of 5 years from age 25 to 30 nearly halves your final corpus.

Frequently asked questions

How much corpus do I need to retire in India?
Use the 25x rule: multiply your expected annual expenses at retirement by 25. If you need Rs 60,000/month (Rs 7.2 lakh/year) at retirement, you need Rs 1.8 crore. For India, 30x is safer given higher inflation and longer life spans. This calculator adjusts for inflation and tells you exactly how much to accumulate.
What is the 4% withdrawal rule?
The 4% rule says you can withdraw 4% of your corpus annually without running out of money over 30 years. Rs 1 crore corpus allows Rs 4 lakh/year (Rs 33,000/month) withdrawal. In India, use 3-3.5% to be safe due to sequence-of-returns risk and higher inflation. This gives you a 33-35x corpus target instead of 25x.
At what age should I start saving for retirement?
Start as early as possible -- ideally in your first job. At 12% CAGR, Rs 5,000/month from age 25 grows to Rs 1.76 crore by 60. The same investment starting at 35 grows to only Rs 50 lakh. Every decade of delay roughly halves your final corpus. Even Rs 2,000/month matters if started early enough.
