Credit Card Rewards

Credit

Credit card reward programs offer points, cashback, miles, or discounts on spending. When used wisely on spends you would make anyway, rewards effectively reduce your cost. The best rewards are earned on high-spend categories like fuel, groceries, dining, and travel.

In detail

Types of rewards:nCashback: direct money back (HDFC Millennia: 5% on Amazon/Flipkart, 2.5% elsewhere)nReward points: Rs 1/point converted to statement credit or vouchers (HDFC Regalia: 4 points per Rs 150)nAir miles: for travel cards (SBI Miles Elite, Axis Vistara)nnMaximising rewards strategy:n1. Choose card that rewards your highest spend categoryn2. Route ALL regular spend through card (groceries, bills, fuel, online shopping)n3. Pay FULL balance on due date (interest negates all rewards)n4. Understand reward redemption -- points that expire or depreciate are worthlessnnRule: rewards are valuable only if you never pay credit card interest.

Formula

Net reward value = Rewards earned - Any annual feenEffective cashback % = Cash value of rewards / Total spend x 100

Real-life example

🇮🇳 India example

Meera spends Rs 40,000/month on groceries, dining, and utilities. HDFC Millennia cashback: 1.5% = Rs 600/month = Rs 7,200/year. Annual fee waived (spend above Rs 1L/year). She pays full balance monthly -- zero interest. Her cashback is pure gain. A colleague gets same card but carries Rs 20,000 balance -- pays 42% interest = Rs 8,400/year, wiping out Rs 7,200 in rewards.

Frequently asked questions

Is paying an annual fee for a premium credit card worth it?
Only if annual fee < value of rewards + benefits. Premium cards (Amex Platinum: Rs 60,000 fee) offer airport lounge access, hotel upgrades, travel insurance, concierge. For frequent travellers (12+ trips/year): the value often exceeds the fee. For occasional travellers: no-fee cards with good cashback are better.
