Dearness Allowance

Full form: DA

Salary & HR

Dearness Allowance is a salary component paid to government employees and pensioners to compensate for inflation. Revised twice yearly (January and July) based on CPI. For private sector employees, a similar concept exists as a cost-of-living adjustment.

In detail

DA for central government employees: currently 50% of basic salary (January 2024). When DA reaches 50% of basic, it is merged with basic -- increasing EPF, gratuity, and HRA calculations. This periodical merger has happened in Indian government pay history.nnDA is fully taxable for employees. For pensioners, DA is also fully taxable. DA increases: government announced 4% DA hike in January 2024, 3% in July 2023.

Formula

DA amount = Basic salary x DA % / 100nAt 50% DA: monthly DA = Rs 30,000 basic x 50% = Rs 15,000/month
