Thematic Fund

Investments

A thematic fund invests in companies aligned with a specific theme -- EV, digital India, healthcare, consumption, infrastructure, ESG. Higher concentration risk than diversified funds but potentially higher returns if the theme plays out.

In detail

Popular Indian themes and performance track record:nInfrastructure: performed well 2023-24 (Modi infrastructure push)nEV/Auto: underperformed on delays in EV adoptionnHealthcare: consistent outperformernESG: returns similar to diversified funds with higher ESG restrictionsnConsumption: long-term secular theme in growing Indian middle classnnRisk: thematic funds are highly concentrated in one theme. If theme doesn't play out as expected (regulatory change, technology shift), the fund can significantly underperform diversified funds. Maximum 10-15% of equity portfolio in thematic funds.

Real-life example

🇮🇳 India example

Sunita invested Rs 2L in an infrastructure thematic fund in 2022 (pre-capex cycle). By 2024, fund returned 48% (Nifty returned 28% in same period). She timely invested at the beginning of India's infrastructure capex cycle. However, such timing is difficult -- most investors buy thematic funds after the theme is already priced in.

Frequently asked questions

Should I invest in a thematic fund?
Only as a satellite (5-10%) of your portfolio, not the core. Core = diversified index funds or flexi-cap. Satellite = thematic for higher risk/return. Avoid buying thematic funds after they have already run up 50-80% on recent performance.
